BATELA WORLD
THE STYLE OF THE SEA
Batela 1991
The Batela story began in the picturesque coastal town of San Sebastian in the Basque Country. Founded by local gift store proprietors Ane and Eneko, the journey began in 1991 with a single raincoat. Faced with the challenge of inconsistent supply, they chose self-reliance, sourcing directly from a raincoat manufacturer to offer this popular item to other merchants.
The enthusiastic response to the raincoat quickly propelled Batela's growth. Additional apparel items joined the repertoire and met with an overwhelmingly positive response. Buoyed by this success, Ane and Eneko diversified further, introducing home decorative products in 1996. As the product range grew, it became evident that they had a thriving enterprise, and the company was christened "Batela."
The name "Batela" carries cultural significance, referencing the traditional fishing boats used in the coastal waters of the Basque Country. Crafted for the art of fishing, they embody the local fishing heritage, central to their livelihood and traditions. Naming the company, Batela was a clear nod toward its roots and inspiration drawn from the coastal surroundings.
From 1991
As Batela grew, the company established its headquarters in the charming town of Getaria, near San Sebastian. Nestled on the Bay of Biscay, Getaria is celebrated for its scenic beauty, delicious seafood, and medieval architecture. Notably, it is also the birthplace of the renowned fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga. The relocation to Getaria marked a significant step for Batela, aligning its operations with the coastal ambiance that inspired its product. Today, numerous creations proudly showcase the distinctive label "GE l 91," serving as a dual homage to Batela's coastal home in Getaria and its founding year.
At the helm today are the founders’ nephew, Urko Atxotegi, and his wife, Brigitte, who together uphold the tradition of creating and sourcing unique nautically-inspired home products and apparel. The company places a premium on fair trade and responsible manufacturing, remaining true to its roots while navigating the currents of contemporary commerce. The legacy of Batela thrives, weaving together elements of tradition, craftsmanship, and a profound connection to the coastal heritage of the Basque Country.
